Multidisciplinary artist to create site-specific artwork and lifestyle merchandise

Located at the Italian Style Area, Patina Tianjin is proud to announce a creative partnership with multidisciplinary artist Oscar Wang ahead of the hotel’s opening in late 2026.
Inspired by Wang’s deeply personal connection to Tianjin, the collaboration will see the creation of an exclusive site-specific artwork which is inspired by the hotel’s historic architecture and unique character, and a signature collection of lifestyle merchandise.
A Fresh Perspective
Oscar Wang works at the intersection of traditional Eastern philosophy and contemporary design. Having trained at Chelsea College of Arts, Wang’s perspective bridges Eastern and Western influences. His design sensibility has drawn some of the world's most well-known brands to work with him: Tiffany & Co., for a piece marking the brand's 180-year legacy through Chinese craftsmanship; Fendi, who selected him as one of six designers worldwide to reimagine the Peekaboo bag; Louis Vuitton and New Balance, among others.
Through his ability to translate cultural narratives into compelling contemporary expressions, Wang offers a new way of seeing Tianjin, revealing layers of history, memory and identity of the city through his lens.
A Family Story Reimagined Through Art

Wang's connection to Tianjin is personal. Right next to Patina Tianjin's Eastern Courtyard stands the old Telephone Bureau No. 4, a building with a direct link to his own family. Wang’s great grandfather, Zhang Ziqi, once worked there — generations before Wang would return and reimagine that same ground through his art.
"China's creative landscape is evolving at an extraordinary pace," says Roland Fasel, President, Capella Hotel Group.
"After Maldives and Osaka, Patina continues to grow with purpose and intention, and Tianjin is a natural next step for a transformative luxury brand shaped by art, music and design. A new generation is shaping culture with boldness, and we want to create space for their perspectives. Oscar Wang’s personal connection with the city brings real depth to our partnership and our first Patina in China, and we invite like-minded travellers to experience the city through the voices that continue to shape it today."
Oscar Wang adds, "Stepping inside the Former Telephone Bureau No. 4 was a deeply personal and evocative experience. To encounter a place so closely connected to my family’s history, while witnessing its new chapter unfold within the city, offered a rare opportunity to reflect on the relationship between memory, place and time. This resonates deeply with my creative philosophy and with Patina’s belief that culture is not something preserved in stillness, but something continually enriched through people, experiences and the passage of generations. I am honoured to bring this personal connection to life through contemporary art pieces at Patina Tianjin, weaving together the layers of the past with the present, and creating a space where history, art and human experience come together in an enduring dialogue."

Located in the bustling Hebei District, Patina Tianjin spans 18,000 square metres across 17 heritage buildings dating back to 1902, offering 143 luxury guest rooms with courtyard views through Italianate windows. The partnership reflects Patina Tianjin's ambition to be more than a gateway to the city — a platform for the people, ideas and creative voices shaping it by way of long-term relationships with contemporary cultural figures such as Oscar Wang.
